Early Sunday in La Vergne, a late-night drive turned into a police-yard spectacle after officers say a man intentionally slammed his truck into another vehicle on Murfreesboro Road, then rolled straight into a restricted area behind the La Vergne Police Department and stopped on the grass.

According to the La Vergne Police Department, reported by WSMV, officers were called just before 2 a.m. Sunday on a radio report of a black truck behind the station. Police say the driver faced officers, flashed his lights and revved the engine before ducking down toward the driver’s seat. He allegedly ignored commands and resisted until officers moved in and took him into custody. No one was injured in the earlier crash on Murfreesboro Road, according to police.

Once the driver was detained, officers searched the truck and reported finding a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat, along with open containers of alcohol and a THC vape, according to WSMV.

Traffic Stops Have Turned Up Weapons Before

The discovery follows a recent pattern in La Vergne where routine traffic enforcement has produced firearms and open alcohol containers, raising ongoing concerns about roadway safety. In January, officers seized a loaded gun and open containers during a stop that started as a simple registration check.

Charges and Next Steps

The man, whose name has not been released, faces a slate of charges that includes aggravated assault on a first responder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault, reckless; resisting; possession of a firearm with intent to go armed; possession of a handgun while under the influence; simple possession/casual exchange; DUI, first offense; and an implied consent violation, according to WSMV. Prosecutors will decide on formal filings as the investigation moves forward.

La Vergne police did not immediately release the suspect’s identity. The City of La Vergne website lists the police department’s address and phone number for tips and records requests, and residents can find contact details on the department’s page if they have information related to the incident.
