LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. - A routine grocery run at an Aldi ended with a 60-year-old shopper in a coma, and now his family is taking the supermarket and its security team to court. The family has filed a civil lawsuit saying a sucker-punch outside the Lauderdale Lakes store last October left the man so severely brain damaged that he can no longer live on his own. The suit targets the supermarket chain, the alleged attacker and the private security company that worked the store, and seeks more than $30 million in damages.
The complaint, according to Local 10, names Aldi, 45-year-old Dandrea Johnson and DF Security, the firm contracted to provide security at the Lauderdale Lakes location. The family says a heated back-and-forth inside the store over the victim's leashed service dog spiraled into violence when employees and security guards failed to cool things down. That alleged inaction, the suit argues, "emboldened the assailant to take things to the next level." The filing seeks more than $30 million to cover long-term medical care, lost income and other damages.
Surveillance video from Oct. 11 captures the argument inside the store, then shows the suspect lingering near the exit before landing a single punch that knocked the shopper to the ground, where he hit his head, authorities said. As reported by CBS Miami, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives arrested Johnson on Oct. 22 and charged him with felony battery causing great bodily harm, and a judge set his bond at $100,000. Before the arrest, deputies released surveillance images and appealed to the public for help identifying the attacker, a move picked up by multiple outlets including Law & Crime.
"He is now profoundly brain damaged and incapable of living a normal, independent life," family attorney Justin Shapiro said, according to Local 10. The victim's son, Brandon Reese, said his father spent weeks on life support in a coma and still battles severe memory problems. "Every day is 'Groundhog Day,' trying to get him to remember things and get him to remember who he is," Reese said. The family argues those ongoing cognitive deficits and the cost of round-the-clock care are at the heart of their damages claim.
What the Suit Alleges
The lawsuit lays out a negligence case against the supermarket and its security provider. It contends that store managers and guards knew about crime patterns in the area but failed to adequately train staff or intervene as the verbal dispute over the service dog escalated. The complaint seeks to hold Aldi responsible for the security setup at the store and claims the guard's alleged failure to step in made the violent outcome both preventable and foreseeable. The family is asking for both compensatory and punitive damages tied to the victim's lifelong medical needs and sharply reduced ability to care for himself.
Criminal Case
Johnson is also fighting a criminal case that runs separate from the family's civil suit. Prosecutors charged him with felony battery with great bodily harm in Broward County. In court, defense attorneys have argued that Johnson was provoked after the victim's service dog allegedly attacked him, a claim investigators are examining, CBS Miami reported. The criminal prosecution and the civil lawsuit operate under different standards of proof, so the outcomes in each could ultimately diverge even though they spring from the same incident.

With the civil complaint now filed, the case heads into discovery, where both sides will trade evidence, question witnesses under oath and dissect surveillance footage and medical records. The criminal case continues on its own schedule in Broward County court.
