Two men were wounded yesterday when gunfire tore through a parking lot on the 5900 block of Market Street in North Oakland, according to police. Witnesses reported a masked shooter firing multiple rounds before fleeing in a vehicle, leaving both victims with gunshot injuries.
The scene
According to East Bay Times, the shooting started at about 6:38 PM yesterday, when a masked suspect opened fire, and more than 10 shots were reported. The victims, a 38-year-old man and a 48-year-old man who live in other parts of the city, drove themselves to a hospital, where both were listed in stable condition, authorities told the paper. Investigators have not released a detailed description of the gunman or the getaway vehicle, the paper reported.
ShotSpotter alert and response
Oakland’s gunshot-detection system registered the rounds and immediately alerted officers, who headed to the Market Street lot. The city’s ShotSpotter reports page explains how the technology pinpoints likely gunfire locations and helps investigators quickly secure scenes and collect evidence, according to the Oakland Police Department. Officers said they recovered evidence at the scene while detectives canvassed the area for additional witnesses.
Investigators seek tips
Detectives are now searching for the masked gunman, and the motive remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear whether the two wounded men knew each other. Anyone with photos or video of the incident is asked to email [email protected], and anyone with tips may call 510-238-3426, according to East Bay Times. Investigators are urging residents and business owners to review door-cam, security, and dash-cam footage for anything that might help the case.
Why it matters
The shooting comes amid a string of high-profile gun incidents in Oakland in recent weeks, including a downtown bar shooting earlier this month that left multiple people hurt and triggered a homicide investigation. Detectives say community video has been crucial in recent cases, and the department continues to urge anyone with information to step forward.
