A visit to see her husband at Heritage Trail Correctional Facility in 2024 turned into a nightmare, according to a Plainfield woman who identifies herself as Jennifer. She says an Internal Affairs officer sexually assaulted her during that visit, then used threats against both her and her husband to keep her quiet.

Jennifer says her husband - who is serving a six-year sentence for a methamphetamine conviction - was later held in a dry cell, beaten in a dorm, and returned to his cell after surgery without pain medication. She also says she has been banned from some facilities, restricted from video visits, and has spent thousands of dollars on phone calls just to stay in touch.

As reported by WOWO, Network Indiana’s interview with Jennifer lays out a series of allegations. She says she was first detained at the prison gate, handcuffed, taken upstairs to an office and accused of trafficking, all after a guard handed her a rubber glove to hold quarters. According to the station, reporters have filed a formal public records request for the officer’s personnel file and are not naming him because of the sensitivity of the claims.

“He did some very, very inappropriate things to me,” Jennifer told WOWO. She says the officer warned her that her husband "wouldn’t make it out of prison alive" and that she later began to see what she describes as patterns of staff involvement in contraband across multiple facilities.

Alleged Timeline, Transfers And Injuries

Jennifer says the fallout started at Heritage Trail and followed her husband across the system. She says he was put in a dry cell for five days at the Reception Diagnostic Center before being moved to the Correctional Industrial Facility in Pendleton.

Once there, she contends, dorm violence left him with an orbital fracture and he was sent back to his housing unit after surgery without pain medication. Those are Jennifer’s allegations and they have not been independently verified.

Facilities And Complaint Channels

The Indiana Department of Correction lists Heritage Trail, the Reception Diagnostic Center (RDC) and the Correctional Industrial Facility among its adult prisons, and describes RDC as the state’s intake and classification center. The department also points families to an independent Ombudsman Bureau where complaints about policy violations can be filed.

Jennifer says she has used those official channels, filing complaints with the Ombudsman and reaching out to state officials, but says she has not received a meaningful response.

Legal And Oversight Questions

If authorities investigate and corroborate parts of Jennifer’s account, the allegations could lead to criminal inquiries, including potential sexual assault and trafficking charges, along with internal disciplinary actions inside the prison system. The Ombudsman’s authority is limited to deciding whether Indiana Department of Correction policy was violated; any criminal charges would fall to county prosecutors.

Reporters at 93 WIBC say they contacted the department for comment but had received no response as of the original publication.

The story puts a spotlight back on contraband, staff conduct and oversight behind prison walls, and on how hard families say it can be to get straight answers. WOWO and Network Indiana report they plan to update their coverage if the Indiana Department of Correction responds to inquiries or if public records reveal any personnel actions. This outlet will track those filings and any official responses as they come in.
