A violent street fight in downtown Carlsbad yesterday left a man with serious stab wounds near the 400 block of Grand Avenue, sending him to a local hospital and kicking off a search for a suspect who slipped away before officers arrived.
Witnesses told police a large physical altercation broke out in the area just before the stabbing. The Carlsbad Police Department is investigating and has not released the victim’s identity while detectives work to piece together what happened.
Police Call It an Isolated Incident as Suspect Escapes
In yesterday's press release, Carlsbad police said the stabbing occurred just before 2 AM during a physical fight involving a group of people, according to NBC 7 San Diego. The outlet reports the victim was being treated for serious injuries and that investigators did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the wider community.
Police said the suspect took off before officers reached the scene and that no arrests had been made at the time of the release.

Detective Chris Collier is leading the effort and can be reached at [email protected] or 442-339-5569, per the City of Carlsbad. Background on Violence Around Grand Avenue
The Grand Avenue and Village corridor has seen trouble before. A large brawl on June 19 that started at a train platform and spilled into the 300 block of Grand Avenue left three people stabbed, and detectives later identified and arrested a suspect in that case, according to The Coast News. City officials and police continue to scrutinize nightlife-related fights as they try to keep the area safe without choking off local businesses.
Anyone with information about Sunday morning’s stabbing is urged to contact investigators through the channels listed above. This story will be updated as officials release additional details.
