Early commuters in Murray got an unwelcome wake-up call Tuesday when an attempted robbery near Main Street turned violent, leaving one man with a head injury and neighbors hearing gunfire just after dawn.
The confrontation happened shortly before 6 a.m., when a man was attacked in what police are calling an aggravated robbery attempt. Witnesses in the area reported hearing shots as the situation escalated, according to police.
Murray Police Ask For Tips
The Murray Police Department said the victim told officers a group of four men approached him and tried to steal his property. During the encounter, one of the suspects pulled a gun and the group assaulted the man, investigators said. The suspects then took off in a beige sedan. Officers are asking anyone with surveillance footage or information from the area of Fireclay and Main Street to call 801-840-4000 and reference case number MR2026-6940, as reported by KUTV.
Shots Fired As Suspects Drove Away
Police told the station that shortly after the assault, the suspects sped away in the beige sedan and allegedly fired six rounds from the car. Investigators are now combing through nearby traffic and security cameras for any leads. No other injuries were reported, and the victim was treated for minor head trauma, according to the police account published by KUTV.
Where This Fits In Statewide Trends
The Murray shooting lands in the middle of a broader statewide conversation about gun violence in Utah. A recent count of homicides last year found 100 deaths statewide, with nearly 70% of victims killed by gunshot, highlighting how firearms remain a central factor in violent crime across the state, as reported by Deseret News. Local officials note that early-morning cases involving multiple suspects and getaway cars are the kind of investigations that often hinge on what cameras and bystanders can provide.
Potential Charges Under State Law
Aggravated robbery, the charge Murray police say they are investigating, is treated as a serious felony under Utah law, and related firearm offenses can add extra penalties, depending on what investigators find. The elements and penalties for those crimes are laid out in the Utah Criminal Code, including statutes for robbery and for offenses involving the discharge of firearms. Those provisions appear in the Utah Code and related sections.
How To Help
Murray police are urging anyone who was in the Main and Fireclay area early Tuesday to review home or business cameras and share anything that might help fill in the timeline. Tipsters can call the number provided by investigators or use the non-emergency contact listed on the city’s police page, per the department’s guidance. Murray City Police.
