A late-night drive in San Jose turned tragic yesterday when a 17-year-old driver was arrested after a collision on Curtner Avenue near Highway 87 that killed another motorist and injured two people, according to police.
The crash was reported at about 1:05 AM and involved a 2022 Honda Accord and a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, police said. The Malibu’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The teen driving the Honda and a woman riding with him were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive. The 17-year-old was booked into county juvenile hall on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, authorities said.
According to The Mercury News, the Honda struck the Malibu as the Malibu was turning onto the eastbound lanes of Curtner Avenue from the southbound Highway 87 off-ramp. San Jose police logged the crash as the city’s 10th traffic death of the year. By the same point in 2025, there had been seven, a jump that has traffic-safety watchers on edge.
Scene And Investigation
The San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit is handling the case and has asked anyone with information or video of the crash to contact detectives at 408-277-4654, according to department advisories from the San José Police Department.
Investigators have been processing the scene, collecting physical evidence and interviewing witnesses while the medical examiner works to confirm the victim’s identity and notify next of kin. Officials have not released the names of anyone involved, pending coroner findings.
Charges And What They Mean
The teen was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI, allegations that in adult court can range from misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter to felony counts if prosecutors can show gross negligence or intoxication. California’s vehicular manslaughter laws and related legal guides spell out how factors such as intoxication or extreme carelessness can elevate the severity of the charges and potential penalties.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, the case will move through the county’s juvenile system. The Santa Clara County Probation Department notes that juveniles are held at Juvenile Hall during detention and pre-court processing.
Community Context
Crashes involving impaired or inexperienced drivers continue to trouble the busy corridors feeding Highway 87, and this latest death has amplified calls for tougher enforcement and more public education around DUI and teen driving.
The Mercury News highlighted the collision’s place in San Jose’s year-to-date traffic death tally, reflecting a concerning rise in fatal wrecks. Investigators are urging anyone with dash-cam footage or other information to come forward, either by contacting the SJPD Traffic Investigations Unit at the number listed in department advisories or by submitting anonymous tips to Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers.
