A 29-year-old Evansville man was taken into custody Wednesday in connection with a two-vehicle crash on State Road 66 in Spencer County that killed two people and sent a third to the hospital, authorities said. The collision happened shortly before 6 p.m. on March 24, and emergency crews shut down the highway for hours while they worked the scene. Investigators say a pickup crossed the center line and slammed into an oncoming car.
Crash Details and Location
The wreck unfolded on State Road 66 just east of County Road 400 West near Reo, where investigators say a pickup truck veered left of center and hit an eastbound vehicle head-on, according to WTHR. Troopers and Spencer County deputies spent the evening photographing the scene and clearing debris from the roadway. That stretch of SR 66 stayed closed for several hours as first responders helped the victims and investigators worked to reconstruct what happened.
Victims and Injuries
Spencer County officials identified the two people pronounced dead at the scene as 64-year-old Barry Morris of Kentucky and 54-year-old Larry Lindsey of Rockport. A third person riding in the car was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. Authorities have not released an update on that individual’s condition. The driver of the pickup was treated and released from a hospital, then turned over to law enforcement.
Arrest and Charges
Police arrested 29-year-old Lindsey Baxter of Evansville at his home on Wednesday and booked him into the Spencer County Jail, according to WTHR. Baxter is facing two felony counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and one felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury. Authorities said more information about the investigation, including any test results, will be released when it is available.
Investigation and Next Steps
The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation and plan to coordinate with the Spencer County prosecutor on formal charges, officials said. Investigators typically wait for toxicology findings and crash reconstruction reports before prosecutors set arraignment dates, and no court schedule had been posted. Anyone with information related to the crash has been asked to contact investigators, and officials have not released further comment.
