A routine weekday drive turned deadly Tuesday afternoon when a head-on crash on LA Highway 1085 near Alice Street claimed the life of a Ponchatoula woman, according to state police. The wreck happened in the mid-afternoon, and first responders rushed the injured driver to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The other driver was taken into custody at the scene after troopers reported signs of impairment. Investigators collected routine toxicology samples, and the case remains under investigation, according to the Louisiana State Police.

Crash Details

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L identified the woman who died as 47-year-old Jessica G. Cannatella of Ponchatoula. She was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee when it was struck head-on by another vehicle. The other vehicle, a 2014 Nissan Murano, was driven by 38-year-old Holly M. Williams of Abita Springs. Troopers say Williams crossed the center line and hit the Cherokee head-on.

Cannatella was unrestrained and suffered serious injuries in the crash. A front-seat passenger in the Nissan, who was also reportedly unrestrained, sustained moderate injuries. Williams and another restrained occupant in the Nissan also suffered moderate injuries, according to troopers. These details are contained in a Troop L news release from Louisiana State Police.

Safety Context

Investigators say the crash highlights two stubborn problems on Louisiana roads: unrestrained occupants and impaired driving. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission's statewide survey, front-seat belt use in Louisiana climbed to 88.4% in 2024, a slight improvement from the previous year, but it still leaves thousands of drivers and passengers riding unbuckled.

State officials report that roughly 30% of recent crashes in Louisiana involve alcohol. Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration continues to log tens of thousands of traffic deaths every year while calling for tougher enforcement and public awareness around drunk and drugged driving.

Charges and Investigation

According to the Troop L release, Williams was arrested at the scene and "will be booked" into the St. Tammany Parish correctional facility on multiple counts. The listed charges include vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury, driving while intoxicated (third offense), careless operation and falsifying a motor vehicle inspection.

Troopers say routine toxicology samples were taken from the drivers as part of the investigation and that the crash remains under active review. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Marc Gremillion with the Troop L public affairs section, according to the release from Louisiana State Police.
