The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone who stayed at a vacation rental at 50730 Granite Butte Way in Oakhurst to contact detectives after investigators say the host secretly recorded guests without their knowledge. The host was arrested last week, and deputies say a search of the home turned up evidence suggesting unsuspecting visitors were filmed. Detectives are now working to identify past guests so they can be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Oakhurst resident Christian Parmalee Edwards, 44, was arrested and booked into the Madera County Jail on multiple felony charges tied to child sexual abuse material. Deputies served a search warrant at the three-story house last Thursday and say they examined roughly 30 electronic devices. According to investigators, more than 4,000 digital files believed to contain child sexual abuse material were recovered from those devices, as reported by SFGATE. “Once detectives started looking at the footage he had on his devices, they saw how he filmed through cracks in windows,” Madera County spokeswoman Kate Woertman said. “It wasn’t hidden cameras. He was holding his phone up … into private areas where you’d expect privacy.”
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children initially alerted authorities to the suspected distribution of child sexual abuse material, according to investigators. Detectives say the Oakhurst house was listed on multiple short-term rental platforms and are asking anyone with information to reach out to Detective Eder Andrade at 559 517 7997, as noted by SFGATE.
How detectives want to hear from past guests
Investigators say they are combing through phone calls, text messages and emails related to the rental and are also watching for tips from social media. People who stayed at the property but no longer have booking details might still recognize the three-story home from an image the sheriff’s office shared online.
Anyone who thinks they may have rented the property, or who has any information about the case, is asked to call the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at (559) 675 7770.
Property records and short term rental context
Public business records list the Granite Butte Way address as the principal address for CP Endeavors LLC and identify Christian P. Edwards as a manager, according to California business filings.
Vacation rentals in and around Bass Lake and Oakhurst are a common side effect of Yosemite National Park tourism, a trend that has fueled local housing pressures and drawn increased scrutiny from local officials, as reported by KQED.
Legal implications
Authorities say Edwards currently faces multiple felony counts related to child sexual abuse material and that additional charges, including potential invasion of privacy counts, could follow as the investigation develops. The Madera County District Attorney’s Office will review the case and decide what formal charges to file.
The sheriff’s office says it is turning over digital evidence for forensic analysis and is reiterating that anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, should contact investigators.
