An ordinary afternoon shopping run in Coral Springs turned violent Thursday when a woman was shot multiple times at a busy plaza and rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Police quickly detained a person of interest as detectives tried to sort out a chaotic scene that also included a two-car crash behind the businesses.
What Police Say
According to Coral Springs police, officers were called around 3 p.m. to the 7600 block of West Sample Road, where they found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken from the shopping plaza with serious injuries, and officers identified and detained a person of interest who is now in police custody.
Aerial video from Chopper 4 showed a landscaping van and a white car that had crashed behind the plaza, adding another layer of mystery to an already tense scene. Investigators said the case remains very much active as they work to determine how, or if, that collision ties into the shooting, according to CBS News.
Hospital And Investigation
The victim was transported to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach for treatment, per Broward Health. Her exact condition has not been publicly updated.
The Coral Springs Police Department is leading the investigation. Its Crime Scene Investigations unit, which typically handles scene processing, fingerprinting and video analysis in cases like this, is among the specialized teams that respond to major incidents, according to the department's divisions directory at Coral Springs Police. Authorities have not released the names of either the victim or the person in custody.
What Investigators Are Still Trying To Learn
Detectives are still working to establish a motive and to determine whether the crash and the gunfire are directly connected or simply an unnerving coincidence in the same alley. This story will be updated as Coral Springs police and local hospital officials release more information.
