Alameda is on the verge of bringing back a familiar hand to steer City Hall, with the City Council set to vote tomorrow on a contract that would make Gerry Beaudin the next city manager. The proposed agreement pegs his official start date at June 30, after several years spent running Pleasanton’s day-to-day operations.
Council Packet Lays Out The Deal
According to the city's Legistar record, the staff report for tomorrow's meeting recommends approval of an employment agreement naming Girard “Gerry” Beaudin as city manager, effective June 30. To accommodate his proposed starting pay, the packet also asks the council to bump the city manager's salary range by 1 percent.
Beaudin brings more than two decades of local government experience to the post, according to SFGATE. He previously served as Alameda’s assistant city manager from 2019 to 2022, has held planning and community development roles around the region, and currently serves as executive director of the Livermore–Pleasanton Fire Department joint powers authority.
Return To Alameda After Four Years In Pleasanton
Pleasanton’s official city website lists Beaudin as its current city manager and details his planning and management background. Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft called his selection a homecoming of sorts, telling Pleasanton Weekly she was “delighted to warmly welcome Gerry Beaudin back.”
Contract Details And What Council Will Consider
The staff report and draft agreement outline a starting annual salary of $383,111, along with a requirement that the city manager’s pay remain at least 5 percent higher than that of other executive managers. The deal also includes a 3 percent deferred compensation contribution, estimated at about $11,493 a year, a $550 monthly automobile allowance, and a 12-month severance provision.
The packet lists standard benefits and leave cash out provisions as well, and council staff have recommended placing the item on tomorrow's consent calendar. The packet on Legistar contains the full text of the employment agreement.
Next Steps And Legal Notes
The appointment is scheduled for the council’s regular Tuesday meeting, according to the City of Alameda. Before taking final action, state law requires the council to provide an oral summary of the recommended pay and benefits for a “local agency executive” in open session, a transparency rule laid out in the California Government Code.
If the council signs off on the agreement, Beaudin would step in for Interim City Manager Adam Politzer and begin work on June 30. Pleasanton will then have to launch its own succession process, and the move is expected to ripple through Tri Valley staffing and budgets, as reported by LivermoreVine.
