Yesterday's hike in Rockville Hills Regional Park turned tense when a hiker reported spotting a bear on the trail. Deputies responded to the call, escorted the hiker out of the area, and the city quickly followed with a public-safety advisory for nearby neighborhoods.
According to ABC10, the Solano County Sheriff's Office checked the trails but did not see any bears during their sweep. Deputies say sightings are not unusual in the Rockville Hills area, where wildlife routinely crosses between open space and residential streets.
Where the Sighting Happened
Rockville Hills Regional Park sits on the northwest edge of Fairfield and spans roughly 633 acres of oak woodland and grassland. The park, managed by the City of Fairfield, lies in a more rural section of town where it is not unusual for wild animals to wander close to homes.
What Officials Are Asking Residents To Do
City officials are reminding residents that a bear sighting is a cue to be cautious, not to panic. People are urged to avoid contact with bears, give them space to move back toward wildland areas, and bring pets indoors, as reported by ABC10. The advisory also asks homeowners to secure trash and pet food left outside, keep doors and windows closed and locked, and report non-emergency sightings to the Solano County Sheriff's Office so deputies can monitor the animal's movements.
If You See a Bear
If a bear shows aggressive behavior, the City of Fairfield instructs people to get to a safe place and call 911. For non-emergency sightings, officials ask residents to contact the Solano County Sheriff's Office so the animal can be monitored, and to never approach or feed wildlife. Hikers are encouraged to stay on marked trails, hike with others when possible, and make some noise along the way to reduce surprise encounters.
Authorities emphasize that bears are part of the natural backdrop around Rockville Hills and that simple precautions, such as locking trash, securing pet food, and keeping pets indoors at night, can greatly reduce the risk of conflict. Residents with concerns or questions are encouraged to contact local authorities for guidance.
