A 21-year-old man was shot in the stomach in a broad daylight attack on a busy Belmont commercial strip Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Neighbors looked on as police and emergency crews swarmed the block and taped off the scene.
Police said the gunfire erupted just before 2:20 p.m. near Cambreleng Avenue and East 187th Street. Cameras captured investigators placing evidence markers and combing the area for clues, according to News 12 New York.
Victim and hospital update
Emergency Medical Services rushed the wounded man to St. Barnabas Hospital, a facility within the SBH Health System that serves the Belmont area. The hospital lists its main campus on Third Avenue and handles trauma and emergency cases across the Bronx, according to SBH Health System.
Investigation at the scene
Orange cones were placed over shell casings in front of a barber shop as detectives worked to piece together what happened. Authorities told reporters the victim is expected to recover and that EMS took him to St. Barnabas Hospital, per News 12 New York. Detectives canvassed the block for witnesses and surveillance footage, and no arrests were reported immediately.
Belmont's recent daytime violence
The shooting adds to a string of daytime incidents in the neighborhood. Earlier this month a separate midday shooting on East 183rd Street left a 20-year-old critically wounded and briefly locked down the block, as reported by Belmont block locked down.
