Gunfire tore through the pre-dawn quiet in downtown Indianapolis on Friday, leaving one man injured and putting a big chunk of the Mile Square behind police tape for hours.
Just before 3 a.m., shots were fired near the heart of downtown. A wounded man was later dropped off at a hospital, where he was receiving care while detectives fanned out across the area, blocking streets and hunting for witnesses and surveillance video.
According to WISH‑TV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were first called to the intersection of Meridian and Georgia streets. A short time later, officers found two people on Henry Street near Madison Avenue, and both were detained for questioning. Police have not said whether those two are considered suspects, and investigators are still working from witness descriptions shared at the scene.
Downtown Safety And Late-Night Trouble
The early morning shooting lands in the middle of a larger conversation about what downtown feels like after dark. Local reporting and police data point to a run of late-night incidents in the Mile Square that has already pushed commanders to beef up patrols on busy nights.
WRTV has reported that nonfatal shootings in the Mile Square have risen in recent years, a trend that city officials say has led to a more visible police presence around downtown events and nightlife hotspots. Friday’s gunfire adds one more case file to a stack that has residents and business owners keeping a wary eye on closing time.
Police Say Attack Was “Targeted”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told reporters it believes the shooting was targeted, not random, and said there is “no danger to the public,” according to WISH‑TV. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and are asking anyone who might have seen something, or who has video from nearby buildings or vehicles, to get in touch.
Investigators have not publicly identified the victim and have not announced any charges tied to the two people detained for questioning. Police say updates will come as the case moves forward and urged anyone with information to contact IMPD detectives or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
