A late-night call to Macon-Bibb 911 led deputies to a grim discovery Tuesday, when human remains were found in a creek off Chambers Cove Road in Bibb County, officials said.
Responding deputies located the body in a wooded area south of Chambers Cove Road. Investigators have not yet identified the man and do not know how long he had been at the scene. Chief Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley said the remains will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for further examination.
According to The Georgia Sun, the call came in at about 9:03 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies then found male remains in the creek, and investigators have not released any identification or cause of death while the area remains under examination.
What officials are doing
Chief Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley, whose name appears on the Macon-Bibb County coroner contact page, confirmed county officials will send the remains to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for testing.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office lists its main line at (478) 751-7500 for tips, and local nonprofit Macon Regional Crimestoppers operates an anonymous tip line at 1-877-68CRIME. Investigators are still processing the scene and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
Next steps and context
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation provides forensic lab services to local agencies and will handle identification, toxicology and related testing, the agency says. After lab work is completed and next-of-kin have been notified, authorities typically release the victim's identity and cause of death. There was no estimate on when those updates might be available.
In the meantime, investigators are asking anyone who has tips or video from the Chambers Cove Road area on Tuesday night to contact local law enforcement or use the anonymous Crimestoppers line.
