Two traffic stops in South San Francisco today ended with loaded handguns pulled from cars, several people in cuffs, and fresh booking photos for the county jail, according to police.
The South San Francisco Police Department said the officer-initiated stops happened in different parts of the city: one near Hillside Boulevard and South San Francisco Drive, the other in a hotel parking lot on South Airport Boulevard. The department later shared photos and a brief recap on Facebook.
Stops Turn Up Loaded Guns And Land Suspects In Jail
According to the department, both stops turned up loaded, concealed firearms and led to multiple arrests.
In the first case, near Hillside Boulevard and South San Francisco Drive, officers reported finding a loaded, concealed, unregistered handgun tucked under the driver’s seat. Police say the driver told officers the gun had been bought off the street and was arrested without incident.
At the second stop, in a hotel parking lot on South Airport Boulevard, officers say they recovered a loaded Glock 17 that had been reported lost out of Alameda County, along with additional ammunition. Police said one of the people arrested in that stop was a prohibited person. Two people were booked into the San Mateo County jail.
State Gun Laws That Could Come Into Play
California law generally bans carrying a loaded firearm in public under Penal Code §25850, according to the California Legislature. Carrying a concealed firearm is a separate offense under Penal Code §25400, as outlined by the Shouse Law Group, and penalties can increase depending on the circumstances.
The state also bars certain people from possessing firearms, including those with qualifying felony convictions, under Penal Code §29800, per the California Legislature. That law can turn a possession case into a felony if the person is prohibited from having guns.
How This Fits Into The Local Gun Trend
Local police departments have increasingly been spotlighting gun recoveries on social media, and South San Francisco is no exception. Hoodline previously reported that the department had seized 38 illegally possessed firearms as part of recent enforcement efforts.
Similar officer-initiated stops that turned up guns have been publicized across the Bay Area, including a recent Los Altos traffic stop highlighted by Hoodline that also leaned on department photos as key reporting material.
Booking And What Happens Next
Police said the people arrested in today’s stops were booked into San Mateo County custody. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division lists the Maguire Correctional Facility as the county’s main intake site for adult arrests.
Anyone with information connected to the cases was asked to contact the South San Francisco Police Department, according to the agency’s Facebook post.
