State troopers, Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies and industry representatives packed a meeting room in Donaldsonville early Wednesday, sitting down with more than 100 commercial drivers after a string of crashes and an overturned dump truck that shut down a stretch of LA 405 on Tuesday. With construction traffic tied to a nearby multibillion-dollar steel project sending more heavy haulers onto local roads, officials say they are rolling out new warning signs and stepping up enforcement.
Officials Press Truckers After Recent Crashes
In a Facebook post Wednesday, Louisiana State Police Transportation Safety Services said it has fielded numerous complaints about unsafe driving behavior in the Donaldsonville area and will keep enforcing federal motor carrier safety regulations and state law, according to Louisiana State Police. The agency said it will work with Rene Industries Inc. on future safety talks and urged the public to report reckless driving by dialing *LSP (*577).
New Signs, Slower Speeds On LA 405
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has started putting up warning and speed-limit signs for commercial vehicles on LA 405 and is recommending a 40 mph advisory speed for dump trucks as deputies respond to multiple road closures, according to WAFB. The latest shutdown came Tuesday near Mount Calvary Church Lane, when an overturned dump truck blocked the highway for hours.
Steel Megaproject Behind Traffic Surge
The spike in heavy-haul traffic tracks with construction at the RiverPlex MegaPark, where Hyundai Steel Company plans a $5.8 billion electric-arc-furnace steel mill that state officials say will mean steady truck deliveries throughout the build-out. Louisiana Economic Development estimates about 1,300 direct jobs and roughly 4,100 indirect jobs tied to the project, according to Louisiana Economic Development. Hoodline previously covered the $5.8 billion Hyundai steel deal.
Crackdown Carries Real Compliance Risks
Troopers and federal inspectors can issue citations, fines or out-of-service orders when they find drivers or carriers breaking Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including rules on hours of service, load securement and vehicle maintenance, according to the FMCSA. Officials are warning carriers to take a hard look at driver logs, securement practices and weight rules as enforcement ramps up on LA 405.
How Locals Can Report Reckless Haulers
Authorities are asking residents to report unsafe commercial driving to *LSP (*577) and to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office for local follow-up, per Louisiana State Police. LSP and APSO say the early-morning safety meetings and follow-up inspections will continue while contractors haul aggregates and other materials for the Hyundai project.
