
One of East Memphis’s busiest stretches of roadway turned deadly Tuesday night when a woman was hit by a vehicle on Poplar Avenue near Aaron Brenner Drive and later died at the hospital.
The crash happened around 8 p.m., and first responders rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Memphis police blocked lanes along Poplar while officers and medics worked the scene.
According to Action News 5, investigators said the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The station reported that authorities have not yet released the victim’s name and did not indicate that any charges have been filed at this time.
Deadly Pattern For Pedestrians On Poplar
Poplar Avenue has been the backdrop for several serious pedestrian crashes in recent years, underscoring how dangerous the busy corridor can be for people on foot.
The Memphis Police Department’s online case summaries document a fatal hit and run involving a pedestrian on August 6, 2025, near Cresthaven Road, according to the Memphis Police Department. In that incident, officers said the driver took off after striking the victim.
Local media also covered a separate fatal pedestrian collision on Poplar in Midtown on February 18, 2026, reported by Action News 5. Together, the cases have kept Poplar Avenue firmly on the radar for traffic investigators and city safety officials.
