Google is cracking open a $25 million West Memphis Energy Impact Fund, aiming to cut utility bills and boost home energy efficiency across Crittenden County and the surrounding region. The company says the program will kick off with a $5 million first round, with the rest rolling out over the next five years. Local officials and Google representatives announced the initial awards on Tuesday at the Mayor Joyce Ferguson Civic Center.
As reported by the Daily Memphian, regional leaders said the money is designed to back energy-efficiency work and make power costs more manageable for residents. According to the outlet, the first $5 million will flow to local nonprofits and to a partnership that includes Google, ICF, and Entergy Arkansas, all under the umbrella of the broader $25 million pledge.
Who’s Getting the First Grants
According to Google, the inaugural grant recipients include Groundswell Community Power, Crowley’s Ridge Development Council, and a Google-ICF-Entergy program focused on homes that need structural work before they can receive efficiency upgrades. Google says the awards are set up to pair critical repairs with weatherization and new HVAC systems so households can qualify for deeper, longer-term efficiency improvements.
How the Money Will Work on the Ground
Local reporting says the ICF/Entergy partnership will zero in on roughly 200 Crittenden County residences for pre-weatherization and follow-up upgrades, including insulation, plumbing repairs, and HVAC replacement, according to Action News 5. The approach pairs immediate health-and-safety fixes with efficiency investments intended to shrink monthly bills and build a pipeline of local contracting jobs.
Tied to Google’s West Memphis Data Center Build
The fund is linked to Google’s much larger footprint in the area, where the company is building a multi-billion-dollar data center in West Memphis and has promised community investments alongside the project. Entergy Arkansas has said it will power the facility and boost local generation with a planned 600-megawatt solar project backed by 350 MW of battery storage, according to an Entergy news release. Google says it has convened a 12-member Community Energy Advisory Council that will steer a $1.25 million pool of community grants scheduled for award later in 2026, and that Elevate Energy will serve as the fund administrator.
