A routine Monday in Griffith turned tragic when a local business owner was struck and killed in a parking lot, and a Gary man now faces a murder charge in connection with the crash, authorities said.
Police identified the victim as northwest Indiana businessman Tony Pendleton and the suspect as Atrailu Moore. Officers say Moore followed Pendleton through a parking lot near the 1100-block of East Ridge Road in Griffith, confronted him briefly, then hit him with a red Jeep Grand Cherokee, fatally injuring him, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Police responded just after 11:20 a.m. Monday and arrested Moore at the scene, where he had remained, officials said. He is being held at the Lake County Jail while detectives continue to investigate. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Jason Gary at 219-924-7503 ext. 252, or to call an anonymous tip line at 219-922-3085, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Pedestrian Safety In Context
Pendleton’s death lands in the middle of a troubling national trend. Pedestrian deaths have grown as a share of overall traffic fatalities in recent years, something federal health and safety officials flag as an ongoing public-safety problem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that pedestrian injuries and deaths remain a major issue, with factors such as vehicle speed and visibility playing a big role in how bad a crash can get. Busy business districts and parking lots can be especially risky, since drivers and pedestrians share tight spaces where sight lines are often limited.
Investigation Continues
Griffith police say the case is still very much active. Officers reviewed the scene and spoke with witnesses before seeking charges against Moore, according to ABC7 Chicago. Prosecutors and the Lake County sheriff’s office had not released further charging details or a court date at the time of the report.
Investigators are asking the public to come forward with any video or eyewitness accounts that might help clarify what led up to the collision, including the moments before Pendleton was hit.
Legal Note
Moore has been charged with murder, an offense defined under Indiana law at Justia as knowingly or intentionally killing another person. Sentencing and any potential enhancements are governed by separate state provisions that allow prosecutors to seek heightened penalties in certain cases, as outlined in Indiana’s sentencing statutes on FindLaw.
As with any criminal case, Moore is entitled to legal counsel. The case will move through the Lake County court system as prosecutors file formal paperwork and hearings are scheduled. Those procedural steps had not been posted publicly at the time of reporting.
