Gunfire cracked through the Greenbriar Apartments in Frayser on Friday night, leaving a man wounded and a familiar sense of unease hanging over the complex. Memphis police say the shooter bolted before officers got there and is still on the run.
The victim was taken by private car to Methodist University Hospital, where he was being treated, according to police. The shooting happened inside the Greenbriar complex near Madewell Street, an area where neighbors say gunfire is hardly a stranger. Officers are asking anyone who knows anything to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH instead of trying to play detective in the courtyard.
Police say they responded after multiple reports of shots being fired. Investigators told FOX13 Memphis they have not released a suspect description and are leaning on residents for help. Detectives are urging people in and around the complex to review any doorbell or dash-cam footage for possible clues, and to share tips directly with Crime Stoppers or Memphis police rather than confronting anyone themselves.
Greenbriar Complex Has a Recent History of Gunfire
This latest shooting is not an isolated scare at Greenbriar. The complex has seen multiple shootings in recent months, including a mid-February drive-by that injured a woman and a child, according to Action News 5.
Local coverage has repeatedly flagged the 3100 block of Madewell Street as a hotspot for violence. See Valentine's Day gunfire for earlier reporting from the same stretch.
How to Help Investigators
Detectives say the investigation remains active and no arrests have been announced. Anyone with video or information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH or contact the Memphis Police Department's non-emergency line, according to FOX13 Memphis.
Investigators are asking residents to preserve any doorbell, surveillance, or dash-cam footage from the time of the shooting and share it directly with police to help track down the suspect.
