Gunfire in the middle of the workday turned a Tampa business park into a crime scene Tuesday, leaving an adult man dead in a busy office parking lot.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 1:57 p.m. after callers reported shots fired at a business complex in the 5800 block of North 53rd Street. When deputies arrived, they found an adult male in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Tampa Free Press.
Investigators are treating the shooting as a homicide. The victim's identity has not yet been released.
What investigators say
Detectives remained on scene into the afternoon, working to piece together what led up to the shooting in the middle of a commercial district.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told the Tampa Free Press that "this remains an active investigation" and is asking anyone who saw or heard anything to contact them.
Violence in the area
The killing comes amid a run of recent shootings around Tampa, including a deadly incident on W. Palmetto Street over the weekend. In that case, detectives urged neighbors to check doorbell and dash-cam footage as they worked to build a timeline.
Now, investigators are again looking for eyes and ears in the community to help fill in the gaps.
