A late-morning shooting near one of South Fulton's busier intersections turned deadly Thursday, sending detectives scrambling for answers and cutting off traffic as police locked down the scene.
South Fulton police say the gunfire erupted around 10:30 a.m. near Cascade Road and Fairburn Road. Officers shut down parts of the area while investigators moved through the intersection, looking for shell casings, cameras and witnesses who might have seen what happened.
Investigators described the shooting as fatal and told 11Alive they were still piecing together the circumstances. Police have not released the victim's name or any suspect description.
Intersection On Edge After Recent Violence
The Cascade and Fairburn corridor has already been on high alert, with a string of violent incidents rattling people who live and work nearby.
On April 10, a shooting at a Campbellton-Fairburn Road shopping center left one person in critical condition and sent the victim to Grady Memorial Hospital, according to Atlanta News First. In separate coverage, lunchtime gunfire rocks South Fulton plaza detailed how officers treated the shopping center as an active crime scene while asking the public to come forward with information.
Part Of A Broader Spring Surge
The deadly shooting near Cascade and Fairburn comes as South Fulton confronts a broader wave of gun violence this spring. On March 18, two teenagers were killed in a separate incident, a case that further heightened public safety concerns citywide, CBS Atlanta reported.
City leaders told CBS they are watching the investigations closely and have urged residents to share tips with law enforcement.
South Fulton police are now asking anyone with information or video related to Thursday's shooting to contact the department, officers told 11Alive. Authorities say they will release additional details as the investigation develops.
