Malachi Cornwall, 20, of Poughkeepsie, was sentenced in Dutchess County Court on Thursday, April 16, 2026, to 10 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to first-degree assault in connection with a shooting that left another person seriously injured. Authorities say the victim was struck in the back, needed surgery and spent several days in the hospital after the Sept. 27, 2025 attack near 313 Main St. in the city of Poughkeepsie.
Guilty Plea And Sentence
According to reporting by Daily Voice, Cornwall pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree on March 4 and returned to court for sentencing on April 16. Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi called the shooting “a calculated act of violence that could easily have resulted in a loss of life,” saying Cornwall’s decision to fire a loaded gun on a public street put bystanders at “grave risk.”
