A routine traffic stop that started in Sunrise turned into a wild scene in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday morning, ending with a rollover crash on the 1100 block of Powerline Road and several people in the hospital with minor injuries.
Neighbors reported waking up to find an overturned vehicle in a front yard and another car shoved up against a utility pole as first responders flooded the block. Fort Lauderdale Police said the chaos began when a suspect fled a traffic stop in Sunrise, then slammed into a civilian vehicle on Powerline Road, causing one car to flip and injuring both bystanders and the suspect.
The suspect and the injured civilians were taken to Broward General Hospital with minor injuries, according to NBC6 South Florida. Video shared with the station shows one vehicle resting upside down in front of a home, another car with heavy damage backed into a pole, and officers tending to women and a child on the lawn. Fort Lauderdale Police said the crash remains under investigation.
Neighbor Clinton Wright told NBC6 South Florida he "just saw the white car" speed down the street with officers trailing behind it, then "heard a big bang" as the collision unfolded. He said the impact left the neighborhood rattled, but emergency crews moved in quickly to help the injured.
Powerline Road’s History of Serious Crashes
The 1100 block of Powerline Road sits along a busy stretch of thoroughfare that has seen its share of serious wrecks. In June 2024, a crash on the same block killed a driver and sent an officer to the hospital, according to WSVN.
What Authorities Are Doing
Fort Lauderdale Police have not yet released the suspect’s name or any additional details about the prior felony allegations tied to the Sunrise traffic stop. This is a developing story, and officials say more information will be shared as the investigation moves forward.
