Chef Rick Bayless' family foundation is putting serious money behind Mexican arts in Chicago, pledging $1 million to the National Museum of Mexican Art to overhaul the museum's West Wing in Pilsen. The lead gift will fund a sweeping revamp of the performing-arts space and include a new name for the venue. The project is part of an approximately $5 million renovation the museum says it plans to complete by 2028.
In a press release via the National Museum of Mexican Art, museum leaders described the Bayless Family Foundation's pledge as the single largest gift so far for the West Wing upgrade and confirmed that the renovated venue will be renamed Foro de Artes Bayless. Rick Bayless, who has served on the museum's board, is quoted in the release saying, "We're life-long fans of the arts." Museum representatives added that the foundation wants the gift to open more doors for Mexican and Mexican-descended performers and students.
As reported by CBS Chicago, the donation will support work at the museum's Pilsen campus at 1852 W. 19th Street and folds into a broader roughly $5 million push to modernize the museum's performing-arts facilities between 2026 and 2028. CBS also noted that Rick and Deann Bayless were honored with the Sandra Cisneros Award at the museum's 2025 Gala de Arte, a nod to the couple's long relationship with NMMA. Museum officials say the renovation is intended to boost evening programming and send more foot traffic toward nearby businesses.
Renovations Will Modernize Performance Space
In its announcement, the museum laid out a wish list that reads like a full reset of the West Wing performance area. Plans include relocating the stage to improve sightlines, upgrading and expanding seating with telescoping options, installing a hydraulic stage and modern audiovisual systems, and carving out flexible spaces that can double as dressing rooms with new restrooms and a shower for performers. According to the release, the goal is to turn the West Wing into a professional-caliber venue suitable for theater, music and community festivals. Museum leaders say the improvements are designed to boost accessibility for audiences and expand technical capacity for visiting artists.
What It Means For Pilsen
Local arts organizers say a refreshed Foro de Artes Bayless could spark more homegrown productions and help stabilize evening business for Pilsen's restaurants and shops. As WTTW has documented, the National Museum of Mexican Art already functions as a neighborhood anchor, with exhibitions, education programs and community events that pull in school groups and out-of-town visitors alike. Museum leaders say the Bayless gift is meant to jump-start additional philanthropic support while widening opportunities for both young people and professional artists.
The museum's Gala de Arte is scheduled for May 1, 2026, at the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier, and the museum's events page notes that proceeds help fund exhibitions, youth education programs and performance series. Renovation planning and fundraising are set to continue as the museum phases work over the next two years, and the events page lists ticket and sponsorship details for individuals and institutions interested in backing the campaign. For more information and ongoing updates, the museum directs supporters to its Gala page and calendar.
