Google is planting a serious AI flag in South Korea, with plans to open its first overseas artificial intelligence campus in Seoul this year, following talks with top government officials. The move plugs the tech giant directly into the country’s K-Moonshot push and marks a big step up for Google DeepMind’s research presence in Asia.
Under a new agreement, South Korea and Google will build an AI campus in the capital to deepen collaboration with local engineers and startups. The Science Ministry and Google have signed a memorandum of understanding on the project, and officials say the campus is expected to open within the year, according to AJU Press.

Google DeepMind says the Seoul campus will serve as a hub for AI-for-science research, talent development, and AI-safety work, while exploring partnerships with major universities and national research centers. The company plans to pilot tools such as Gemini-powered coding agents and multi-agent AI collaborators to speed up scientific discovery, as detailed by Google DeepMind.

The memorandum was signed at a ceremony in Seoul after a meeting between President Lee Jae-myung and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. Seoul has asked Google to send at least ten engineers from its U.S. headquarters to work on-site at the new campus, and Hassabis said he would consider the request. He added that he hoped the hub would offer internships and other training programs, and he pointed to potential joint projects with Samsung, SK hynix, Hyundai's Boston Dynamics unit, and LG. During the talks, President Lee also raised the need for a base wage to help protect workers from AI-related job losses, as reported by Reuters.
