Nearly two years after a 15-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded outside Gately Stadium, a 31-year-old Chicago woman has been arrested and charged in the case, authorities say.
Police allege the teen was struck in the abdomen on Aug. 24, 2024, and rushed to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition. The suspect, identified as Darnisha Jones of the Ashburn neighborhood, was taken into custody Monday near 111th Street and Langley Avenue, according to police.
Police account and charges
According to Fox 32 Chicago, officers say the boy was standing in a parking lot when he was confronted, and that Jones, seated inside a white vehicle, pulled a handgun and opened fire. She was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Fox 32 Chicago reports she has a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The shooting unfolded around 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 24, 2024, in the 10200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, right outside Gately Stadium, as reported by CBS Chicago. At the time, CBS Chicago reported the teen was taken to Comer Children's Hospital and that no one was in custody in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Jones is expected to appear for a detention hearing this week, where prosecutors will decide whether she will be held as the case proceeds, per Fox 32 Chicago. Court records and any future statements from the Cook County state's attorney's office are expected to shed more light on the allegations as the case moves forward.
