A Tuesday confrontation outside a southwest Memphis convenience store turned fatal when a man was shot and killed near the Walker Homes public-housing complex, leaving residents rattled and on edge.
Police say the victim and the suspect got into a physical fight outside Walker Homes Groceries before one of them pulled a gun and opened fire. The wounded man was later pronounced dead. According to LocalMemphis, officers reported that the suspected shooter took off in a gray SUV and has not been found, as detectives continue canvassing the area. Previous Incidents Around Walker Homes
The killing adds to a growing list of violent incidents in and around Walker Homes. Earlier this year, a January shooting that left a woman critically injured was reported in the area, and Action News 5 has previously documented police investigations at the complex. Together, those reports highlight how often officers are being sent back to the same neighborhood for serious crimes.
Investigation Under Way
No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday, and detectives were combing through surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as they tracked leads, according to LocalMemphis. Officials are warning residents not to confront anyone they believe might be involved and instead to pass along tips through Crime Stoppers or directly to police.
