A Saturday night patrol on Lawyers Road turned dangerous when a Union County deputy was struck by a car, then trailed it for roughly half a mile before other officers moved in and took the driver into custody. The deputy was injured, according to the sheriff's office, which has not released details on how serious those injuries are.
In a Facebook post, the Union County Sheriff's Office said the deputy's cruiser was hit on the rear passenger side by a red Nissan Versa that kept going down Lawyers Road instead of stopping. Deputies later found the car about half a mile away. According to the post, deputies used Google Translate to communicate with the driver at the scene, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol later assumed responsibility for the investigation. The post also provided the suspect's name and the initial charges that were filed that night.

"Noel Catarino Velasqueaz is being held at the detention facility under a detainer," the Union County Sheriff's Office said, adding that the driver showed "red, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol." The post lists charges that include hit-and-run property damage, driving while impaired, no liability insurance and an open-container violation. His bond was set at $15,000 secured. The North Carolina Highway Patrol has taken over the case and will handle any further investigative steps.
