A normally quiet stretch of West Pullman turned into a crime scene late Sunday night after a car slammed into a tree and police discovered that both men inside had been shot to death.
Chicago police said the violence unfolded around 10:09 p.m. in the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue on the Far South Side, where officers arrived to find a black sedan that had struck a tree with two men inside, both suffering from gunshot wounds, according to CBS Chicago.
The 20-year-old driver was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The passenger, also hit by gunfire, was pronounced dead at the scene, the outlet reported. What started as a crash call quickly turned into a double homicide investigation, adding to what neighbors described as an unusually tense night for the block.
Area Two detectives are leading the case. Police had not released the victims' names or identified a motive as of late Sunday, and no arrests had been announced, according to reporting from ABC7 Chicago. Investigators are asking anyone who knows what happened to speak up.
Violent Weekend Across the City
The West Pullman shooting was part of a broader stretch of bloodshed across Chicago over the same weekend. Police said at least four people were killed and 11 others wounded in separate shootings within about 48 hours, including a case in which a Chicago police officer was shot and later died at a hospital, CBS Chicago reported. Detectives across multiple Areas spent the weekend juggling scenes and canvassing neighborhoods.
Where West Pullman Stands
West Pullman has been wrestling with repeated outbreaks of gunfire in recent months. In late March, officers collected roughly 86 shell casings after a fatal midday shooting on the Far South Side, according to a Hoodline roundup, a detail that rattled residents and anti-violence organizers already calling for help.
Those same advocates have been urging more patrols and resources as detectives work case after case.
