Five people were sent to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries after a fire tore through a Belleville apartment building on Monday morning, prompting a fast-moving evacuation of residents. Fire crews swarmed the scene, ambulances lined the street and, at least for now, officials say there are no reported fatalities.
Scene and response
According to KSDK, the fire broke out at an apartment building in Belleville and five people were transported to area hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Video from the scene showed multiple fire units working the blaze while crews checked units and moved residents away from the building. Investigators were already on site as firefighters worked to get the situation under control and to start piecing together how the blaze began.
Why apartment fires spread fast
Apartment and other multi-family buildings make up a significant share of reported home-structure fires, with kitchens frequently identified as the starting point, according to the National Fire Protection Association. NFPA estimates indicate that apartments account for roughly 110,000 reported fires each year in recent years, with a large share traced back to cooking incidents. Working smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and basic safe-cooking habits remain some of the most reliable tools to reduce injuries and fatalities in multi-unit buildings.
Investigation and aftermath
Investigators stayed on scene Monday to sift through the damage, document the units and start the process of notifying residents who were displaced, KSDK reported. City and fire officials had not yet released the building’s address or the identities of those taken to the hospital. Local agencies said they plan to share more information as the investigation moves forward and as they assess the full extent of the damage.
