A vacant Sonic Drive-In on San Antonio's South Side went up in flames Thursday, with firefighters describing the scene as a "very active, heavy" blaze that quickly pushed crews into a defensive fight.
The fire broke out at the intersection of Southeast Military Drive and Lorita Drive, wrapping the empty building in flames as San Antonio Fire Department crews arrived. With the structure already heavily involved, firefighters were forced to battle the blaze from the outside while San Antonio police secured the scene.
According to KENS5, SAFD officials said investigators stayed on site into Thursday night, and the department has not yet determined what sparked the fire. SAFD said it plans to release more information as the investigation moves forward.
Vacant Site Part Of Local Trend
The property has been sitting empty in recent months, one of several Sonic locations around San Antonio that have gone dark. As Sonic Drive-Ins Go Dark reported, multiple former Sonic pads across the city have closed or been repurposed, leaving behind scattered pockets of vacant drive-in space.
Investigation Remains Active
KENS5 reported that both the San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department remained on scene as crews worked into the evening. Officials have not released any details on the cause of the fire or whether anyone was injured.
