A basement fire at a Hayward convalescent home sent firefighters racing to Hesperian Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon, but quick work kept the scare from turning tragic. Yesterday at approximately 2:32 PM, crews responded to a reported structure fire at a convalescent home on Hesperian Boulevard in Hayward. Firefighters evacuated about 18 residents to the front of the facility and launched an aggressive interior attack, bringing the blaze under control. No residents or firefighters were reported injured, and those who were temporarily moved outside were allowed back inside after ventilation and safety checks. According to fire officials, the blaze started in the basement and spread to the roof of the building.
How firefighters stopped the blaze
The Alameda County Fire Department said crews mounted an aggressive interior attack and brought the fire under control shortly after units arrived on scene. Firefighters checked the building for fire extension and air quality concerns as part of overhaul operations. Department personnel also confirmed that ventilation and systematic searches were conducted to ensure the fire was fully contained.
About the facility
The building at 19700 Hesperian Blvd is home to Driftwood Healthcare Center, a skilled nursing facility with roughly 88 certified beds, according to federal nursing home records. ProPublica lists the Hayward facility in its nursing home database, noting its chain affiliation and recent inspection history.
Residents evacuated, then returned after checks
Crews temporarily evacuated 18 residents to the front of the convalescent home while firefighters ventilated the building and checked for extension and air quality issues. Once ventilation and safety checks were complete, residents were allowed back inside, with no injuries reported among residents or firefighters. Firefighters then completed overhaul work to ensure there were no hidden hotspots.
What comes next
Officials did not immediately provide a cause for the blaze in their public post, and no timeline for a formal investigation was announced. Family members with questions about individual residents were advised to contact the facility directly, and the Alameda County Fire Department's media center continues to maintain updates on major incidents in the county.
