A possible shooting, a 10-minute vehicle chase, a crash and an arrest turned a quiet stretch near Calistoga into a traffic headache today, as law enforcement shut down Dunaweal Lane and later southbound Highway 29. At least one person was taken to a hospital, and officials stressed there was no ongoing public-safety threat while investigators locked down the scene and diverted drivers.
What Officials Say
According to the Napa Valley Register, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office first got the call around 10:45 AM about a possible shooting at the stub end of Dunaweal Lane. Deputies quickly shut down Dunaweal near Silverado Trail while they checked the area, and the sheriff’s office pushed out an Everbridge alert to let nearby residents know there was active police work underway.
The county’s emergency notification system, Alert Napa County (Everbridge), sent out a notice on the closure and stated there was no reported threat to public safety, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office. The agency’s site explains that Alert Napa County and Everbridge are used for fast updates on incidents like road closures and emergencies. Locals were told to steer clear while deputies and the California Highway Patrol managed traffic and worked the investigation.
Road Closures And Timeline
The Register reported that a vehicle pursuit kicked off around 11:05 AM, ran for about 10 minutes and ended in a crash that brought CHP units to the scene. During the response, southbound Highway 29 near Wine Country Lane north of Napa was shut down and did not fully reopen until just before 1:30 PM, the paper said.
Authorities told the outlet the collision itself is not being treated as a criminal incident, although a suspect was taken into custody. While investigators documented evidence and cleared the roadway, residents and motorists were detoured around the closures.
Local Context
This same stretch of Dunaweal Lane has already been on locals’ radar for safety concerns. A fatal bicycling collision in April also shut the road for hours while investigators worked the scene. Coverage of that April crash pointed to narrow shoulders and steady tourist traffic along the Silverado Trail corridor, conditions residents and cyclists say make the roads more dangerous.
Today’s pursuit and closures are adding fresh fuel to those up-valley safety complaints, with neighbors again calling for improvements on these busy lanes.
Investigation And Tips
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the incident, and anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s dispatch. The sheriff’s website lists public information contacts and tip lines for follow-up and records requests.
