A Coral Springs homeowner says his quiet backyard turned into a makeshift bathroom for people waiting at a nearby county bus stop, and that county crews finally pulled the shelter and bench after he raised the alarm. He says those changes, along with more visible police patrols, have already cut down on the number of people cutting through his property.
Bibi Zabal‑Eta, who has lived in the home for nearly a decade, told WSVN he installed a camera and discovered people walking into his yard to relieve themselves "once or twice a day" over the past couple of months. He says he regularly cleans behind the fence and puts on gloves before doing it, according to the station.
Broward County Transit Oversees Shelters
Broward County Transit is the agency responsible for county bus stops and shelter maintenance, and the county’s public meetings dashboard shows BCT routinely reviews fleet needs and stop conditions. County documents indicate that office coordinates with cities on bus routes and amenities, and that coordination led to a recent review of the Coral Springs stop, according to Broward County records.
Shelter Removed, Neighborhood Sees Relief
After the complaint, county crews removed the metal chairs, overhang, railings and bench at the bus stop, and Coral Springs police boosted patrols in the area, officials told WSVN. Zabal‑Eta said the bus stop remains in place without a shelter, but foot traffic near his yard has noticeably dropped since the removal.
Legal Note
Public urination and defecation can run afoul of state and local laws and may be charged under disorderly‑conduct, trespass or indecent‑exposure provisions. Under Florida Statutes §800.03, exposing sexual organs in public is prohibited, although how that is enforced often depends on context and local policy.
For now, the homeowner says he is relieved the county stepped in and wants officials to keep an eye on the stop so the situation does not return. County and city officials did not issue additional public statements beyond what was provided to the station.
