Chicago police say two women were shot Friday night while they sat inside a car near West Huron Street and North Avers Avenue in the Garfield Park neighborhood. The victims, ages 31 and 32, were treated on the scene, then taken to nearby hospitals, where both were reported in fair condition. Area Four detectives have opened an investigation, and police have not yet released any information about suspects or a possible motive.
Shooting details and victims' condition
According to ABC7 Chicago, the gunfire broke out just before 9 p.m. Friday near West Huron and North Avers. The 31-year-old woman was shot twice in the chest and twice in the arm. Chicago Fire Department medics treated her at the scene before she was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition. The 32-year-old woman was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, also in fair condition. Area Four detectives are handling the case.
Scene and response
Neighbors reported a heavy emergency response as ambulances and police units flooded the block, part of a West Side stretch that has seen multiple shootings this spring. Local coverage of the neighborhood has tracked a string of recent incidents, including an April drive-by that wounded several people on Pulaski, as well as a separate May shooting that left a teenager hospitalized in critical condition.
West Side context
Police records and neighborhood reporting show Garfield Park and surrounding West Side blocks have been hit by repeated, and at times deadly, incidents in recent weeks. The Chicago Sun-Times reported in April on a multi-victim attack in West Garfield Park that highlighted how quickly confrontations in the area can escalate.
Investigators seeking information
Police have not released descriptions of any suspects or a possible motive and are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to contact Area Four detectives. Local outlets have urged residents to submit anonymous tips through the Chicago Police Department’s online system. In its coverage of recent shootings, CPD accepts tips online and via non-emergency lines, and ABC7 Chicago reported that officials had no further details available at the time.
The investigation remains active. This story will be updated if police or hospital officials release additional information.
