A multi-state sex-trafficking investigation led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT) Unit ended Tuesday in Covington with three people in handcuffs and a raft of charges that stretch across state lines.

Authorities arrested 35-year-old Jonathan Daniels of Lithonia in Covington and booked him into the Newton County Jail on a charge of sex trafficking with the intent to receive money, along with multiple drug-possession counts. Two women arrested alongside him, 31-year-old Trenica Jena Ford of Decatur and 32-year-old Kesonia Alenthia Nembhard of Loganville, were each charged with several drug-possession offenses.

According to WSB-TV, Daniels faces counts for possession of MDMA, methamphetamine, oxycodone and marijuana less than an ounce. Ford and Nembhard are charged with possession of MDMA, methamphetamine, oxycodone and marijuana less than an ounce as well. WSB-TV reports the arrests took place during an operation led by the GBI HEAT Unit with help from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, and that all three suspects were booked into the Newton County Jail.

In a press release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Henrico County, Virginia, police asked the HEAT Unit on May 4 to help locate Daniels, and Newton County deputies assisted in the arrest. The GBI noted Daniels had active warrants out of Fulton County for failure to appear on a weapons charge, along with felony retail-theft warrants in Wisconsin, and urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the HEAT Unit.

Pattern Across Metro Atlanta

Investigators across metro Atlanta have increasingly turned to multi-jurisdiction task forces to go after trafficking cases, which often spill over city and county borders. Recent arrests in Brookhaven highlighted that trend once again. Coverage of the Brookhaven child-trafficking case showed prosecutors and the state attorney general’s trafficking unit working with local police in an investigation involving a juvenile victim.

Legal Penalties

Trafficking for labor or sexual servitude is a felony under Georgia law and carries serious prison time. The statute generally provides 10 to 20 years of imprisonment, with tougher penalties when victims are minors, according to state code. The trafficking law is codified at O.C.G.A. § 16-5-46 and summarized on legal reference sites such as Justia.

The GBI said anyone with information should contact the HEAT Unit at (404) 270-8433 or submit an anonymous tip to 1-800-597-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be filed online through the GBI portal. Local authorities have released few additional details while the investigation continues.
