A tense stretch of US-101 near the Petaluma Boulevard North exit turned into a crime scene last week, when a driver allegedly pulled a handgun during a road-rage confrontation and ended the day in handcuffs. Santa Rosa CHP says troopers detained the suspect without incident, seized a loaded handgun that authorities say was unregistered, and booked the individual into the Sonoma County Jail on multiple felony charges.
According to CHP Santa Rosa, officers conducted a traffic stop on the freeway, recovered a loaded, unregistered handgun, and detained the suspect without further incident. The agency said the person was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on multiple felony counts. CHP has not yet released the suspect’s name or the specific charges, which are pending review by the Sonoma County District Attorney.
Freeway Stop Fits A Pattern
US-101 has seen more than its share of tempers flaring into criminal cases. As reported when CHP officers previously intercepted drivers flashing guns on US-101, road-rage incidents along the corridor have escalated into weapons recoveries in recent years, as per Hoodline. Those cases highlight how quickly a heated lane-change dispute can turn into a felony investigation.
What The Law Says
Carrying a loaded firearm in public is generally illegal under California law. Penal Code section 25850, outlined by the California Legislature, makes possession of a loaded gun in public an offense that can be charged as a felony in some circumstances. The California Department of Justice notes that unregistered weapons and related violations can increase a suspect’s legal exposure, and that prosecutors decide final charges after reviewing the evidence.
How To Share Tips Or Video
Anyone who captured dash-cam footage or witnessed the stop is asked to contact the CHP Santa Rosa office at (707) 806-5600, according to The Press Democrat. After hours, callers can reach the CHP Golden Gate Communications Center at (707) 641-8300. Investigators say they are still working on the case and want anyone with information to come forward.
