Recent shootings on Lee Street
The latest incident adds to a string of shootings along the same stretch this month. Per the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded on May 23 to a double shooting near 535 Lee St. SW, where both victims were alert and taken to the hospital. Investigators said the accounts from the injured people conflicted, and detectives are still working to sort out what happened.
Robbery-related shooting at nearby gas station
Days before the latest Lee Street shooting, police were called to a nearby gas station on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard for what authorities described as a robbery-related attack. As reported by WSB-TV, officers responded on May 29 to 507 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. SW, where they found a person shot multiple times who was still conscious and breathing. Investigators said that robbery remains under investigation and that they were looking for information on possible suspects.
Why neighbors are on edge
The Lee Street corridor has drawn heightened scrutiny after several shootings this month, including a deadly early-May incident in which investigators briefly detained a private security guard for questioning, according to a report on the deadly early-May shooting. Residents and community leaders say the repeat violence has intensified concerns about safety in the West End and surrounding blocks.
