A quiet stretch of Lee Street SW in southwest Atlanta turned into a homicide scene early Saturday when a man in his early 20s was shot multiple times and died at the location, according to police. Officers detained a 59-year-old man at the scene, described by investigators as a security officer for the store's property owner, while detectives gathered evidence and took statements. Police roped off a wide area with crime-scene tape, and the store itself was closed when the shooting happened.
What police say
Lt. Butler told Channel 2 Action News that investigators detained the older man "to receive a statement," and that the store where the shooting occurred was not open at the time. He would not say whether the victim was armed, according to WSB-TV. Detectives remained on scene through Saturday morning while officers processed evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.
Southwest Atlanta context
The shooting took place on Lee St. SW, in a part of the city that has already seen more than its share of recent violence. A fatal shooting on nearby Coleman Street in February highlighted neighbors' growing concerns about repeat violence and lingering safety issues in the surrounding blocks.
Legal implications
Because the person detained is reported to be working as a private security officer, investigators are expected to scrutinize interviews, surveillance footage and physical evidence to determine whether the use of force was justified and whether any criminal charges are warranted. The Atlanta Police Department notes that detentions at a crime scene are preliminary while investigations are still underway, and it asks anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477), according to the APD website. Prosecutors would decide whether to file charges only after investigators complete their work and forward the case findings.
What investigators are doing
Officers established a broad perimeter with crime-scene tape as homicide detectives canvassed for witnesses and surveillance video, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, WSB-TV reported. Police have described the case as active and developing, saying they plan to release more information as it becomes available.
