Gunfire erupted late Friday in Castleberry Hill, rattling the compact neighborhood just southwest of downtown Atlanta and leaving two people shot near one of its busiest corners.
Atlanta police were called to the area around 11 p.m., where a heavy law enforcement presence quickly formed near Peters Street Southwest and Walker Street Southwest. At the scene, officials released only limited information, and the conditions of the two victims were not immediately known.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, officers found two people suffering from gunshot wounds and launched an on-site investigation along Peters Street SW. The outlet reported investigators working behind crime-scene tape and noted that, as of late Friday night, police had not released any suspect description or possible motive while the investigation remained active.
Where it happened
Castleberry Hill sits immediately west of the downtown core and is threaded by Peters, Walker and Nelson streets, a mix of lofts, galleries and late-night venues that pull in crowds after dark. Per City of Atlanta planning documents, the neighborhood’s tight street grid pushes both cars and pedestrians onto a handful of main corridors, including Peters and Walker, which can concentrate nighttime activity into a few busy blocks.
Part of a wider violent streak
The Castleberry Hill shooting comes amid a series of violent incidents across Atlanta in recent months that have increased pressure on city leaders and law enforcement. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has chronicled multiple shootings citywide, including several near downtown, that have heightened public concern. Atlanta police told FOX 5 Atlanta that their investigation into Friday night’s incident is ongoing and that no suspect descriptions had been released.
This story will be updated as authorities release more information or announce any arrests. Anyone with details about the shooting is asked to contact Atlanta Police Department investigators.
