A woman is dead and her neighbor is behind bars after a shooting inside a Marietta apartment building that police say began as a hallway encounter and ended with gunfire. Investigators identified the victim as 62-year-old Lucinda Bailey, who was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and later died. The suspected shooter, 61-year-old Angela Freeman, was taken into custody and is being held pending charges, according to authorities.
Officers were called to an apartment building in the 300 block of Roselane Street around 4:15 p.m., where they found Bailey wounded in a third-floor hallway before sending her to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, as reported by 11Alive. Police later identified Freeman as the suspect, and said the investigation remains active.
Charges and custody
Police say Freeman now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault with a weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. She is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, the county jail that handles arrests in Marietta, according to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office. Prosecutors are expected to review the case as detectives continue working through evidence and witness accounts.
What police are asking
Investigators are still piecing together what unfolded inside the building and are asking anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward. Authorities urged tipsters to contact Detective Fowler at 770-794-5388, as reported by 11Alive. The department's Major Crimes Unit is leading the probe.
Local context
The arrest comes on the heels of several recent gun incidents in and around Marietta, including a recent SWAT surge to Vandiver corridor after reports of shots fired. Community members say they want to see stronger prevention efforts, even as police respond quickly and investigators work to determine what led to this latest deadly shooting.
