Judge-imposed consequences were severe for 19-year-old Tavarus Williams, who received a 25-year prison sentence followed by 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2022 killing of 17-year-old Cairi McNear. Both families filled the courtroom as McNear’s mother, Aurianna, told the judge she forgives Williams and wants to mentor him while he serves his time.
Williams was 15 on May 4, 2022, when the shooting happened. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was charged as an adult, according to Local 10. Along with the 25-year prison term and decade of probation, the judge attached several rehabilitation-focused conditions. Williams must write a letter of apology to the McNear family, donate to a victim compensation fund, and complete substance-abuse and mental-health treatment.
How the Killing Unfolded
The shooting took place in the courtyard of an apartment complex in northwest Miami-Dade. McNear was hit multiple times and collapsed near a laundry area, according to earlier reports. Investigators used surveillance footage and witness tips to identify the shooter, who police said sped away on a mini-bike and was later found in Broward County, according to NBC 6. The case first moved through juvenile court before prosecutors sought to have Williams charged as an adult.

During the sentencing hearing, Aurianna McNear turned directly toward the young man who killed her son and spoke words few in the room expected to hear.
“I am merciful for you. I want to get to know you. I want to become, at some point when my heart heals, to love you,” she told the court, according to Local 10. She also said she hopes to mentor Williams as he serves his sentence.
Williams, addressing the judge and McNear’s relatives, said he hopes that one day the family will see him as someone they can care about instead of hate.
