A 21-year-old Muncie man is facing a stack of felony charges after a May 10 shooting on the city’s south side that left his girlfriend dead and two men who tried to step in seriously wounded. Investigators say the suspect dragged the woman along a sidewalk, then opened fire when a pickup pulled up and its occupants got out. Officers later discovered three young children locked in a bedroom in what they described as deplorable living conditions.
What police say
According to WRTV, officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of South Walnut Street shortly before 5:30 p.m., where they found three people shot outside a residence. The suspect, identified as Rylynn J. Davis, had been detained by a passerby. Davis reportedly told officers he had been “protecting himself,” the station reported.
Surveillance footage and witness accounts
As reported by WKRC (via WXIN), court documents and nearby surveillance video show Davis striking 23-year-old Cheyenne Angelina Raines and dragging her before firing multiple shots at a pickup truck that had stopped nearby. One witness told investigators Davis appeared “emotionless and cold” while he was shooting, and audio from the camera captured several gunshots moments after the vehicle pulled up.
Victims and charges
WRTV reports that Raines was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Two men who tried to help were also hit by gunfire. One was flown to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition, while the other was treated at Ball Memorial. Court filings and local coverage indicate prosecutors have brought a series of counts against Davis, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, kidnapping, criminal confinement, criminal recklessness and neglect of a dependent.
Children found; neglect counts
As reported by The Star Press, investigators later found three children, estimated to be about 3 years old, 2 years old and 3 months old, locked inside a bedroom. The children were described as being covered in dirt and feces, leading prosecutors to add neglect-of-a-dependent charges. The affidavit cited by reporters described the bedroom as “deplorable,” and those details are included in the charging documents.
Case next steps
Prosecutors filed charges this week, and Davis is being held without bond, according to WKRC. Authorities say they will continue reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements as they finalize the charging packet for the Delaware County prosecutor’s office.
Legal context
As The Star Press notes, a murder conviction in Indiana can carry a decades-long prison term, with local reporting citing a possible maximum of 65 years for the murder count. Any eventual sentence would depend on how the case is charged and the outcome of a trial or plea. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Muncie Police Department’s detective division at 765-747-4867, and they point out that resources remain available for people facing domestic violence or child welfare concerns.
