A routine prep for an AP Chemistry project at Fishers High School turned into a full-on emergency response today, after a chemical reaction in a classroom prompted a heavy police and fire presence on campus. School officials and first responders said the incident was contained, the material was destroyed in a controlled operation, and no students or staff were hurt.
Fishers Police and the Fishers Department of Fire and Emergency Services responded quickly, with Indiana State Police assisting in the investigation. According to district officials, the reaction occurred while a teacher was getting materials ready for an upcoming AP Chemistry assignment. Crews then moved in and safely destroyed the unknown substance on site, as reported by WISH-TV.
Administrators worked alongside first responders during the incident, and classes were expected to stay on a regular schedule while the investigation moves forward.
Response and cleanup
Fire crews and hazardous-material teams isolated the affected classroom, removed the unknown substance, and then destroyed it in a controlled manner outside normal school activity. Officials described the scene as secure and emphasized that incidents like this are rare, even if they grab everyone’s attention when they do happen.
Similar lab mishaps have made the news nearby in recent weeks, including a May 13 lab burn in Greene County that sent a student to the hospital, reported by WHIO, and a May 6 evacuation at Swanton High School after staff detected a chemical odor, covered by 13abc.
For now, Fishers school officials say the high school is safe, the situation is under control, and the investigation remains active. Families with questions were urged to contact the school through normal communication channels, and the district said it will share more information if additional details emerge.
