A North Miami man is behind bars after police say he recorded himself sexually assaulting his severely burned girlfriend as she lay unresponsive, and that the 23-year-old woman later died. Investigators say video on his phone shows the victim inside a black plastic tote and includes a clip where her boyfriend appears to insert a sex toy into her. Detectives also allege he put off calling for help, spending critical time searching for ways to treat burns and obtain narcotics instead of immediately seeking emergency care.

How investigators say it unfolded

According to NBC6, North Miami police responded on Jan. 27 to the 400 block of Northwest 125th Street after Miami-Dade Fire Rescue found a woman with burns covering an estimated 80 to 90 percent of her body. Medics rushed the 23-year-old to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead, the arrest warrant states.

The warrant quoted by NBC6 also notes that Juan Lopez told first responders the victim had used rubbing alcohol and lit a candle. Investigators wrote that the burns were inflicted "by still undetermined means," leaving the exact cause under active review.

Evidence on the phone

Police say they seized Lopez’s cellphone and uncovered multiple videos, messages and searches that raised alarms, according to Local 10. The arrest warrant reviewed by the station describes footage of the woman lying in a large black plastic tote inside a shower, with what appears to be soapy water pouring over her.

In the digital messages cited by Local 10, Lopez allegedly tells the victim, “I poked a hole in that thing to make sure you don't drown in there.” Investigators say his search history included phrases such as “how 2 treat second degree burns” and “oxy for burn pain,” along with texts about buying meth and “tusi.”

Graphic videos and toxicology

An earlier video clip that Lopez allegedly tried to delete shows him “humming joyfully” while inserting a sex toy into the visibly burned and unresponsive woman, officials wrote in the warrant, according to NBC6. In other recordings, he is heard telling her, “We set a rule on the shower. you can't have the water running when I'm not here,” and warning, “God forbid I don't get back here in time, you're gonna unalive yourself,” the document states.

Toxicology testing from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office reportedly found cocaine, fentanyl, ketamine and methamphetamine in the woman’s system, NBC6 reported.

Charges and booking

Records show 41-year-old Juan Lopez was arrested Friday and booked on a charge of sexual battery of a victim who was physically helpless, along with methamphetamine-trafficking and other drug counts, Local 10 reports. A Miami-Dade judge ordered Lopez held without bond. Court records identify him as a Texas-born security guard who is being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would pursue additional charges linked to the woman’s death, according to Local 10.

What the law says

Under Florida law, a person is considered “physically helpless” if they are unconscious, asleep or otherwise unable to communicate unwillingness to an act. Sexual battery can include penetration by an object. Those definitions appear in Chapter 794 of the Florida Statutes.

These provisions carry felony penalties and allow prosecutors to seek enhanced charges when a victim is incapacitated or other aggravating factors are present. The arrest warrant and news reports describe allegations, not proven facts, and any decision on additional criminal counts will rest with Miami-Dade prosecutors as the case moves forward.

Investigators say the case remains under active review while detectives continue to process digital evidence and phone records. Officials have not publicly released the victim’s name in the redacted court filings reviewed by reporters, and the investigation is ongoing.
