A North Miami congregation is reeling after a longtime pastor was arrested Tuesday on child rape and molestation charges, following accusations that the abuse began when the victim was just 5 years old, authorities said. Detectives say that because of the pastor’s status in the community, they believe there may be additional victims and are actively investigating.
Records identify the suspect as 62-year-old Elie Dorcius, pastor of Unity Baptist Church and a North Miami resident. According to investigators, a woman told the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office that Dorcius raped her starting at age 5 and carried out other sexual abuse throughout her childhood. Detectives say Dorcius chose not to speak with them after the allegations surfaced. Local outlet WPLG Local 10 reported that it is withholding the nature of the relationship between Dorcius and the accuser in order to protect her identity.
Public records link Dorcius directly to the church where investigators say the abuse is alleged to have taken place. State corporate filings list an entity called "Unity Baptist Church 1 Inc." at 13001 NW Seventh Ave in North Miami and name Dorcius as both an officer and the registered agent. That corporate address matches the church location cited by investigators, according to the Florida Division of Corporations.
Community Concerns And Recent Faith-Leader Arrests
Dorcius's arrest drops into a year that has already seen multiple high-profile cases involving religious figures in Miami-Dade. In April, an ordained rabbi was charged in a molestation case, and in February, the county's Special Victims Unit arrested another pastor on unrelated allegations. Those incidents sparked tough conversations about accountability for faith leaders, and Dorcius's case is now adding more fuel to that fire. Coverage by CBS Miami and a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office press release outlines the earlier arrests and ongoing scrutiny.
Charges, Booking, And What Comes Next In Court
Authorities took Dorcius into custody on May 19, booking him on child rape and child molestation counts, according to initial reports. Prosecutors have not yet publicly filed detailed charging documents or released a court date, so many of the case specifics remain under wraps. Dorcius, like any defendant, is legally entitled to the presumption of innocence until and unless he is convicted in court, as noted by WPLG Local 10.
