On a quiet Monday night in north St. Louis, grief and anger met again on the Mark Twain block. Family members and neighbors gathered to mark the one-year anniversary of a drive-by that killed two young brothers and left their father wounded, returning to a small memorial lined with candles, photos and whispered prayers. A year after the May 24, 2025 ambush, they say the questions are the same and the silence from the killer or killers is just as loud.
At the candlelight gathering, relatives renewed their public plea for answers and urged whoever knows something to speak up. Richard Neal Jr. told attendees that the search for closure is still very much alive, and family members recited, “Jordan, we love you forever and always,” according to FOX2. Loved ones said no arrests have been announced and pressed anyone with information to come forward.
Police Account of the Attack
According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, detectives say the family’s vehicle came under fire on the night of May 24, 2025, near Union Boulevard and Bircher Boulevard. Investigators report that a maroon Nissan pulled alongside the car as the father drove with four children inside, then opened fire. Nine-year-old Jordan Neal died that night, and his father was also injured. Police have repeatedly asked residents and businesses along I-70 near Union and Bircher to review surveillance footage that might help identify the shooters.
Loss Stretched Into Months
The family’s nightmare did not end with that first loss. Local reporting shows that 11-year-old Richard Neal III later died from complications of his injuries on Oct. 28, 2025. Lt. John Blaskiewicz of the homicide division told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that “the investigation has stalled, but it hasn’t stopped,” underscoring the struggle to find witnesses or usable camera footage. Relatives at the vigil said that lack of movement has only sharpened their grief and frustration.
How to Help Detectives
Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Division at 314-444-5371, or leave an anonymous tip with CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477). Local outlets report that tips leading to felony arrests may qualify for a reward of up to $5,000. Neighbors near the Mark Twain/Union corridor have been urged to review doorbell and security camera footage from the night of the shooting, according to Spectrum News. Detectives say few solid leads have come in since the attack, making community cooperation critical.
The vigil ended with relatives promising to keep the case in the public eye until there is accountability for both boys.
